What's all the fuss about odor control?  Actually, many communities are causing significant problems for companies when they start building new housing developments on previously empty stretches of land that surround your plant.  This tends to cause nuisance neighbor complaints.

PR and community response are concerns that many companies now must face. Education on the hazards (or really non-hazards) of the odors generated take significant amounts of time from a company's personnel that is already stretched.

Sometimes, H2S is generated though and health concerns arise.

Environmental regulations address methane, VOC

How do you address these?

What products are available?

Can housekeeping and system optimization help?

What situations are hazardous and what  just cause Nuisance odors?

What are the new regulations that may impact my plant?

Odor control products:

There are many types of products for many different types of applications.

There are chemical scavengers and oxidizing agents for H2S generation prevention or binding after generation has already occurred.

There are biological products for use in lagoons to prevent septic conditions. Alternate sources of oxygen for the bacteria prevent H2S generation.

There are Mist technologies that capture odor molecules and neutralize them. Case histories and information on how to use and apply are important aspects of any odor control program.

There are biofilters and scrubbers.

Key areas that cause odor problems:

Sludge holding tanks, Lagoons, Equalization tanks, processing areas, vents and stacks, sewers, landfills, livestock pens, pump stations, scrubbers, and composting.
