Mystery Bug of the Month

March-06

Ok, what is growing all over these poor Daphnia?. . . . .

Ok, I had to do a double take. They were not dead, yet they were covered with growth. Yes, even the babies!

These photos were taken under the microscope! They do make cool photos and artwork sometimes!!!!

These photomicrographs were taken from a  golf wastewater pond sample.  Most of the objectives used were  40x and 100x. Some photos were taken at 400x for enlargements, but Daphnia are very large. Some were taken without cover slips so as not to crush the organisms. Videos of this are attached below if you want to download them.

Come take a closer look at the amazing world under the microscope!

Well, now it looks like we have lot of growth stuck to the outer surfaces of the Daphnia

1000x Bright Field now this really looks like he belongs in a science fiction movie, maybe this is where Sigourney Weaver developed from! Look at that weird head!

100x Lactophenol cotton blue stain baby Daphnia

Lacto-Phenol Cotton Blue stain makes it easy to pick out details on a wet mount

100x Bright field yes these are alive and covered with growth, which is typically only found on dead organisms

100x mother with live babies in sac on the back

100x  baby daphnia again with attached growth starting

400x babies in sac, notice the ciliates on the outer shell

400x Bright Field again here is our creature with the distorted head

Hard to believe this is nature! babies with growth

Alien life forms!

Wow, just changing the size makes everything look completely different!

Always zoom in under the microscope to see more details and a totally different perspective.

You might be surprised what you find! It also makes it easier to identify when you come in closer and can see more details.
