Bug Sex?????

Well, everything reproduces, either sexually or asexually.

Let's see what happens under the microscope

These photomicrographs were taken from wastewater samples. Bright Field, Dark Field, and

Phase contrast were used. Most of the objectives used were 400x or 1000x.

Come take a closer look at the amazing world under the microscope!

Egg sac

An entire floc structure loaded with hundreds of rotifers and eggs

As you zoom in, you can see the rotifer eggs or cysts and some that slowly hatch

Stalked ciliates with little baby buds

Once in a while ciliates may reproduce by a process called conjugation. These two ciliates of the genus Spirostomum cling to each other side by side and fuse together. They exchange the genetic material from their nuclei as opposed to the fission process.

After conjugation there is no offspring, the individuals have 'renewed' themselves instead.
This species is probably Spirostomum. The cells are long and tubular with a very large macronucleus that extends the length of the cell.
