Foam and Grease removal at a Texas Barbecue wastewater treatment plant

We were asked to help a small package plant that treats wastewater from a Texas  Barbecue Restaurant.  The plant had serious foaming problems and lots of scum and greasy oil from the barbecue sauce.

They had never used bioaugmentation products, so we suggested a program to combat the grease and oils that were causing the foaming problems.

Here you can see some scum floating and you can see solids and foam build-up in the centerwell

There was a thick, bright reddish orange foam everywhere-the coloring was due to the barbecue sauces and oils

Here you can see thick foam and on the photo on the right, scum and floating solids

We actually placed them on a dual bioaugmentation program for a short time. They used a concentrated liquid degreaser product with bacteria upfront in the lift stations at the restaurant and they used the dried bran biological products at the plant.  It did not take long for the bacteria to get to work! The photos above were taken January 20th prior to the bioaugmentation trial.

The photos below were taken April 6th, 2005 after implementation of the bioaugmentation program. What an incredible difference.

Here the water is so clear, you can see down to the solids on the bottom. The aeration basin has no more thick, greasy foam on it and a nice MLSS.

Areas that before were covered with greasy scum and foam are now crystal clear compared to no treatment. Remember, this is a wastewater treatment plant, it is not a drinking water plant, so in actuality, this is very good. There will be some incoming grease and scum, but there is significantly less due to upstream treatment. Onsite treatment also helped with clearwells, clarifier and foaming on the aeration basin.

Anytime you can pre-treat upstream, you gain two advantages. You use less product, you start working on the grease immediately. You help clean the pipes, so no residual grease can build-up in the pipes and cause later maintenance problems and you start the bacteria already working.  Many restaurants can add small amounts of concentrated liquid bacteria product into their grease traps and drains to help reduce grease problems, and lower maintenance costs.
