Mystery Bug of the Month

Creatures from the Depths below. . . . .

OK, well they are not really from oceans below or under the sea, in reality this little critter and his whole family was found in a wastewater lagoon.  I have to admit, we have looked at wastewater samples for 13 years and from over 6000 different plants, from SBR's, lagoons, UNOX, racetracks, activated sludge etc. We have looked at Paper, refinery, Food, Breweries, Meat, sugar, textile, juice, chicken, potatoes, chocolate, orange juice, etc. anything you can think of, we have probably looked at it.  But we have never seen anything like this.  Any comments, identification or suggestions, feel free to contact us  ... we are temporarily stumped also.

These photomicrographs were taken from a wastewater sample.  Most of the objectives used were 40x or 100x and 400x. 1000x was not needed since these organisms were already extremely large.

Come take a closer look at the amazing world under the microscope!

Ok so here we go, here is our guest this month and his family, let's look a bit closer at what he or they are.. . . .
ok, well they appear to have some type of jaws that move
this was near the lower portion of the body
there appeared to be a network similar to our veins
no this is not a bug from a science fiction movie but it almost looks like it from this view upside down, he appears to have eyes and a mouth like a fly or spider. . .. .
there are internal organ like structures

and yes we took lots of videos and photos

hundreds to be exact, everyone told us we needed to get a life away from the microscope!

ok, here we zoom out

100x

there appeared to be 3-4 of the critters with their " wings" similar to a sea ray all clustered around a "sac" or rotifers.

Some of the rotifers were hatching.

large rotifer cluster on left and smaller on organism on the right
zoom in on one critter's apparent oral section with cilia at top and jaw in center
cilia- created a vortex just like rotifers and stalks
here it looks a bit like a bald man with a mustache

or jaws or claws protruding

rotifers in sac
I would not want that to bite me...

it appears like a mandible in arthropods or sea animals,

one of the paired appendages closest to the mouth.

Trophus

is what is used for identification purposes on these organisms

probably Asplanchna brightwellii

you can see the tail end or feet of some of the rotifers
Vitellarium (v) u-shaped

The jaws are also what is used to identify a species

It appeared to have an eyespot also
