Mystery Bug of the Month Strings and Things. . .
Well at first this appeared to be similar to some of the psychedelic mood lights you saw from the 70's. There were tons of moving strings or filaments waving around in a circular undulating motion!!!! What is it? OK, well they are not really from outer space or leftovers from the 70's retro group, in reality this little critter and his whole family was found in a wastewater lagoon. I have to admit, we have looked at wastewater samples for 13 years and from over 6000 different plants, from SBR's, lagoons, UNOX, racetracks, activated sludge etc. We have looked at Paper, refinery, Food, Breweries, Meat, sugar, textile, juice, chicken, potatoes, chocolate, orange juice, etc. anything you can think of, we have probably looked at it. But we have never seen anything like this. Any comments, identification or suggestions, feel free to contact us ... we are constantly amazed also. These photomicrographs were taken from a wastewater sample. Most of the objectives used were 100x and 400x and 1000x . Come take a closer look at the amazing world under the microscope!
Give up? It took a little examination to sort of figure it out. It appeared to be a dead testate shell or rotifer shell that a cluster of flagellates had taken residence up in. The strings were the flagella whipping around, but they were limited by the outer shell of the dead organism, so the appearance of moving strings was actually pretty cool. There were tons of flagella though and they were moving very fast.
