Higher Life Forms. . . . . Indications that you have a high BOD, high F/M or the presence of metal salts when the color is dark brown!

OK, these are often overlooked and many times you need to be at 400x or 1000x. If you have these in your plant, you are probably running a very high BOD, high F/M and may need to cut back on wasting or use some bioaugmentation products! You may have a high TSS when these are the predominant higher life forms.

We do have videos of this, but they are too large to load on a website. They are one megabyte for each second, so typically 20-30 MG files, so you can see how big the files would get. You may contact us for copies of the videos if you are interested.

These photomicrographs were taken from a wastewater sample. Most of the objectives used were 1000x.

Centropyxis and the smaller Arcella
The Arcella is a small amoeba that belongs to the Phyllum Sarcodina.	They typically range from 50-60 um wide.

From a top view they look like a doughnut
	from the side view, you can see the curvature of the top of the shell
	It is dome-like on the top and concave on the bottom.
	It's color is light yellow when young and its getting darker while aging.



	It is rare to see, but the Pseudopods extend out from the shell and are used for locomotion.
Pseudopodium (lobopodium) can be seen extending from the aperture in the testate shell
It may have a light brown or transparent chitinous "test" (shell).	The shells appear more brown in environmental when metal salts are present.

Arcella is one of the most common of the testate amoebae, especially in highly organically polluted waters. It can often be found in the sediments on the bottom of ponds, where plant, leaves and other materials rot under conditions of low oxygen concentration.	There are two different ways of classification • Taxonomy (ITIS) Kingdom Animalia Phylum Protozoa Subphylum Sarcodina Superclass Rhizopoda Class Lobosa Order Arcellinida Family Arcellidae Genus Arcella • Taxonomy (NCBI) Kingdom Protista Sub-kingdom Protozoa Phylum Sarcomastigophora Sub-phylum Sarcodina Lobosea: Testacealobosia: Arcellinida: Arcellidae
